  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Brookings-Harbor is the last town on the Oregon Coast before California, 8 km from the state line on US-101. It is a small harbour town of about 5,400 people with clean beaches, a working boat basin, redwood country inland and the Chetco River. Most travellers pass through on a coastal road trip; one or two nights is enough to see the beaches, the harbour and Loeb State Park.

Arrive & move

Getting around

US-101 (Chetco Avenue in town) is the only road through, so a car is the practical way to reach beaches, the river and the redwoods. In town, the strip, library, pool and parks are close enough to walk. Intercity buses stop near US-101 and 5th Street.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are the ocean (cold water, sneaker waves, currents), rain-soaked roads and remote stretches of US-101 with no phone signal.
  • Ocean water here is cold year-round; sneaker waves and strong currents make barefoot wading risky — watch children near the surf.
  • Summer fog and wind can hide the coast until midday; plan beach time for the afternoon.
  • Cell coverage and fuel are sparse on US-101 between towns; fill up before long stretches.
  • Some forest roads and park facilities close seasonally — check before you drive in.
