  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • Southern Africa ↗A rental car may leave its home country only with the rental company's cross-border letter, the registration papers and paid road taxes at each post; driving into Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Angola without them ends at the border.
  • Southern Africa ↗Across the subregion, plan every road leg to arrive before sunset: livestock, wildlife, pedestrians and unlit trucks make night driving the main cause of serious visitor accidents.
  • Zambia ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport on official Zambian government sources; if you will cross to Zimbabwe, ask about the KAZA UniVisa and whether it is available to you.
  • Zambia ↗Do not photograph government buildings, police, the military, airports or bridges.
  • Zambia ↗Many bush camps open only in the dry season; check opening dates before you fix flights.

Lusaka is Zambia's capital and air hub, home to about 2.7 million people and the place almost every trip passes through. There is no headline sight: a half day covers the National Museum, Freedom Statue, Kabwata Cultural Village and Soweto Market. Most travellers sleep one night near the airport or the city centre, then fly or take a bus onward to Livingstone or a safari park. Plan one full day if you want the markets and a game ranch, two at most.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Minibuses are cheap (about K15, US$0.50) and run from four stations in the centre, but routes are not posted: ask the conductor. Taxis have no meters, so agree the price before you get in — about US$2 for a short ride is a fair tourist price. Ride-hailing apps work in the city. Distances in the centre are short enough to walk in daylight; carry a torch at night because of open drains.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Kabwe

caution

Door to door: 2.5–3 h

A mining town with little for a day return; stop only if you are heading north.

Kapiri Mposhi

skip

Door to door: 2–3 h

Bus or the TAZARA rail line north

Only useful as the TAZARA junction for Tanzania; not a day out.

Munda Wanga Environmental Park

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Taxi or minibus south-west of the centre

Botanical gardens and a small wildlife sanctuary; entry K30.

Lilayi Lodge

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Taxi or self-drive south of the city

Game drives close to town and a Sunday buffet; book ahead.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

City centre (Cairo Road and Independence Avenue)

Walkable to the National Museum, Freedom Statue and the Inter-City bus terminal; business hotels and the main banks.

Near the airport (Great East Road)

Best for a late arrival or early flight; lodges and guesthouses, little within walking distance.

Kabulonga and Woodlands

Leafy northern suburbs with malls, restaurants and embassies; 15–25 min by taxi to the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Lusaka is generally calm by day but bag-snatching and pickpocketing happen in markets and on minibuses. Keep to daylight walks, use taxis after dark, and leave valuables in the hotel safe.
  • Agree every taxi fare before you get in; there are no meters.
  • Keep bags zipped and hold them in Soweto Market and on crowded minibuses.
  • Walk on the dirt paths beside the road in daylight only; open drains and manhole gaps are a real hazard after dark.
  • Zambian-registered airlines have been barred from EU airspace since 2009; use an international carrier where one exists.

  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Cairo Road and Independence Avenue, the museum and Freedom Statue, Kabwata, and the malls at Manda Hill and the Arcades.
  3. Place pages with verified hours (National Museum, Kabwata Cultural Village, Munda Wanga) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Golden and hostile arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
