Lusaka
Give Lusaka one night as a hub, not a destination: markets and museums in a half day, then move on to the parks or Livingstone.
Lusaka is Zambia's capital and air hub, home to about 2.7 million people and the place almost every trip passes through. There is no headline sight: a half day covers the National Museum, Freedom Statue, Kabwata Cultural Village and Soweto Market. Most travellers sleep one night near the airport or the city centre, then fly or take a bus onward to Livingstone or a safari park. Plan one full day if you want the markets and a game ranch, two at most.

Get around
Minibuses are cheap (about K15, US$0.50) and run from four stations in the centre, but routes are not posted: ask the conductor. Taxis have no meters, so agree the price before you get in — about US$2 for a short ride is a fair tourist price. Ride-hailing apps work in the city. Distances in the centre are short enough to walk in daylight; carry a torch at night because of open drains.

Scams and watch-outs

- Walk on the dirt paths beside the road in daylight only; open drains and manhole gaps are a real hazard after dark.
- Zambian-registered airlines have been barred from EU airspace since 2009; use an international carrier where one exists.
Lusaka is generally calm by day but bag-snatching and pickpocketing happen in markets and on minibuses. Keep to daylight walks, use taxis after dark, and leave valuables in the hotel safe.
