- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Oakland is a port city of about 440,000 on the east side of San Francisco Bay, 12–20 min from San Francisco by BART. It is the Bay Area's most diverse city, with a strong food and arts scene, a walkable downtown core and a lake in the middle of town. Two nights covers the centre and the waterfront; add a third for the hills and a day trip.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
BART is the backbone: 12th St, 19th St and MacArthur stations cover downtown, and the Orange Line runs to Richmond and Berryessa. AC Transit buses fill the gaps ($2.50 cash, $2.25 with Clipper; local day pass $5 — check). Use Clipper or contactless on your phone for all Bay Area agencies. A car helps for the hills and day trips but parking is metered and residential zones are permit-only.

- Car break-ins are the main risk: leave nothing visible, including in the trunk.
- Some blocks south and east of downtown are best avoided on foot after dark; ask your host which ones.

- BART stops running around midnight; plan the last train or budget for a rideshare.
- Summer fog and wind come off the bay: bring a layer even in July.

- Airport-to-bed contract for OAK: last BART-to-OAK people mover times field-checked, rideshare fallback, overnight rung.
- Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: 19th St/Uptown, Lake Merritt, Jack London Square, Temescal/Rockridge.
- Place pages with verified cutoffs (Oakland Museum of California, Fox Theater, Chabot Space and Science Center, Lake Merritt) and eat pages with last orders.
- Hostile arrival fixtures (late flight, no Clipper, rain) so gates A–D can go green.
