Oakland is a port city of about 440,000 on the east side of San Francisco Bay, 12–20 min from San Francisco by BART. It is the Bay Area's most diverse city, with a strong food and arts scene, a walkable downtown core and a lake in the middle of town. BART is the backbone: 12th St, 19th St and MacArthur stations cover downtown, and the Orange Line runs to Richmond and Berryessa. Scams and watch-outs

- The MacArthur Maze (I-80/I-580/I-880/I-980) is confusing and slow 07:00–10:00 and 16:00–20:00.
- BART stops running around midnight; plan the last train or budget for a rideshare.
- Summer fog and wind come off the bay: bring a layer even in July.
