Latrobe

Give Latrobe half a day on the way between Devonport and Cradle Mountain: Gilbert Street, the Axeman's Hall of Fame, then drive on.

Latrobe is a small Mersey River town of about 4,200 people, 10 minutes from Devonport and the Spirit of Tasmania ferry. It works as a half-day stop or one easy first or last night in Tasmania, not as a base for the state. Gilbert Street holds the old buildings, cafés and shops; the Axeman's Hall of Fame and the court house museum sit within walking distance of the river.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to see Latrobe and the north-west coast. The town itself is walkable: Gilbert Street, Bells Parade and the Axeman's Hall of Fame are within about 15 minutes on foot. Mersey Link runs local buses, and Metro Tasmania and Redline coaches pass through from Devonport to the rest of the state, but services are thin.

Craft town on the Meander River; a good lunch stop heading to Launceston.

Bigger town with a makers' workshop and coastal walks.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-risk town. The real issues are driving at dusk on rural roads, cold wet weather even in summer, and limited bus services: keep a car or a booked ride.
  • Most travellers arrive by car: bus timetables are limited and a missed run can strand you.
  • Small-town opening hours: many shops and cafés close early and some shut on public holidays.
  • Rural roads at dusk and dawn carry wildlife; drive slower than the sign and watch for wombats and wallabies.
