Give Henderson one night, two if you want Ellis Park race days or the Audubon trails: it is a small Ohio River town, not a multi-day base.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Henderson sits on a bend of the Ohio River in Kentucky's Western Coal Fields, directly across the water from Evansville, Indiana. It is the seat of Henderson County and the boyhood home of naturalist John James Audubon, whose name carries the state park, the museum and the town's identity. Most travellers reach it by car on US 41 or I-69, use it as a cheaper bed for Evansville, and spend their time on the riverfront, the park trails and the summer race meet at Ellis Park. Two nights covers the town and the surrounding county without rushing.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights are spread along US 41 and the parkways, and there is no useful fixed-route transit for visitors. Downtown is small enough to walk once you park. US 41 and US 60 meet in town; I-69 (the former Pennyrile Parkway) runs south and the Audubon Parkway runs east to Owensboro. Evansville is a short drive north across the river.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 25–35 min

US 41 north across the Ohio River by car

Bigger city across the water: museums, a riverfront and more restaurants. Easy half-day or evening.

Owensboro, Kentucky

go

Door to door: About 45–55 min

Audubon Parkway east by car

Barbecue, a riverfront and the International Bluegrass Music Museum.

Greenville, Kentucky

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

US 41 south, then the Western Kentucky Parkway area roads by car

Small county town; go only if you have a specific reason.

Door to door: About 1 h

US 60 east, then local roads by car

Rural Ohio County seat; combine with Owensboro rather than a dedicated trip.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown and riverfront

Walkable core on the Ohio: Main Street, the library, Second Street bars and restaurants. Best for one night without a car.

US 41 North strip

Chain hotels, motels and the boutique option clustered on the highway north of downtown, 5–10 min by car from the river. Best for drivers and race weekends.

Audubon State Park

Cabins and a campground inside the park, about 10 min north of downtown. Best for hikers, golfers and families who want quiet.

Watch out

Safety

Henderson is a small river town and generally calm for visitors; the real issues are driving after a few drinks, thin late-night ride-share, and summer heat on the park trails. Lock your car and stay in lit areas downtown after dark.
  • Distances between downtown, the US 41 North hotel strip and the state park are 5–10 min by car; walking them is unpleasant along the highway shoulder.
  • Ellis Park is physically north of the Ohio River but legally in Kentucky; do not assume you have crossed into Indiana.
  • Summer afternoons are hot and humid; plan trail walking for the morning.
  • Local calls need all 10 digits, and the area now uses two area codes (270 and 364).
  • Ride-share coverage is thin outside Evansville hours: check before relying on it late at night.
