Kochi is Kerala's commercial capital and its old spice port, split between the heritage peninsula of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry and the mainland business city of Ernakulam. Two to three nights covers the colonial core, the Chinese fishing nets, the Jew Town lanes and a Kathakali or backwater evening. It is a low-risk, walkable introduction to Kerala and the usual first stop before Munnar or the backwaters.

Getting around

Ferries link Ernakulam's Boat Jetty with Fort Kochi and Vypin; the Kochi Metro covers the mainland from Aluva through Ernakulam. Autos and app cabs handle the rest — agree the fare or use the meter. Fort Kochi and Mattancherry are best on foot.

Watch out

Safety

Kochi is one of India's calmer big cities for visitors. The real risks are monsoon flooding and rough seas, meter-refusing autos, and heat and humidity — carry water and start sightseeing early.
  • Monsoon June–August brings very heavy rain and rough seas; ferry and boat services can be disrupted.
  • Auto drivers at Fort Kochi and the railway stations often refuse the meter: agree the price first or use an app cab.
  • Touts sell 'backwater cruises' and 'Kathakali shows' at inflated prices; book through your guesthouse or a licensed operator.
  • Drink bottled or filtered water; street food is fine when it is cooked hot and busy.
