Hulst is a small fortified town in Zeelandic Flanders, 3 km from the Belgian border, with an intact rampart ring and moat around the whole old centre. It sits in an isolated corner of the Netherlands: the fastest road and rail links run through Belgium, so most visitors arrive from Antwerp or Ghent, not from Amsterdam. The old town is walkable in half a day; the surrounding polders, beaches and tidal reserve need a bike or car.

Getting around

The old centre is small enough to walk; the rampart ring is about 3.5 km. For Perkpolder beach, Saeftinghe, the border villages or the Westerschelde dyke you need a bicycle or car — local buses do not serve those spots well. Buses link Hulst with other Zeelandic Flanders towns; De Lijn runs to Sint-Niklaas (Belgium) and Connexxion to Breda via Antwerp.

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are the tidal mudflats at Saeftinghe, oyster shells at Perkpolder and bicycles on the narrow streets. Use 112 for emergencies.
  • The nearest railway station is Sint-Niklaas in Belgium, not in Hulst; plan the bus or a car.
  • Saeftinghe mudflats flood fast: go only with a guide, never alone.
  • Perkpolder beach has oyster shells in the shallows; wear shoes in the water.
  • Many restaurants close one or two days a week outside summer; check before you walk out.
