Give Balıkesir one night as a rail or road break between Istanbul and Izmir: the old mosques and clock tower sit within 500 m of the station.
Balıkesir is a working Anatolian city on the Istanbul–Izmir corridor, not a resort. Almost everything worth seeing — the clock tower, the National Forces Museum, the 14th- and 15th-century mosques — is inside a 500 m walk of the railway station, so a half-day on the way through is enough. The coast at Bandırma, Edremit and the thermal springs in the hills are separate trips.

Getting around
Walk: the clock tower, museums and mosques are within 500 m of the railway station. Local buses and dolmuş minibuses radiate from Eski Garaj, the old bus terminal beside the station. The main otogar is 5 km north-east on the Bandırma road, with frequent shuttles to Eski Garaj.

Safety
- The city is inland and hot in July and August; plan indoor stops at midday.
- Some listed sights have irregular or unverified opening hours — the photography museum has been closed and the contemporary art museum's posted hours are unreliable. Check locally before walking out.
- The 1898 earthquake destroyed most of the old town; do not expect a historic quarter.
