Esztergom was the first capital of the Kingdom of Hungary and still holds the country's largest church, a 71.5 m dome above the Danube. It sits on the Slovak border, 45–65 km north of Budapest by road and about 1 h 30 min by train. Most travellers see it as a Danube Bend stop; the basilica, the castle museum and the view back over the river are the reasons to come.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: basilica hill to Széchenyi tér is about 15 min on foot, and the train station is a further 20 min. Local buses cover the edges. For the Danube Bend, buses and the seasonal river boats connect Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom; the ferry piers at Pilismarót and Dömös serve the far bank.

Watch out

Safety

Esztergom is a small, quiet town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are the steep, uneven steps on basilica hill, summer heat with little shade, and traffic on the main roads; watch your bag in crowds at the basilica.
  • The basilica dome lookout is weather-dependent and has almost 400 steps: check opening before you climb.
  • The train station is about a 20-min walk from the basilica; taxis are limited, so plan the walk.
  • The Dömös–Nagymaros ferry has been suspended since 2014: check locally before relying on it.
  • Crossing to Štúrovo means entering Slovakia: carry your passport or ID.
