Bekasi is Indonesia's third-largest city by population and part of the Jabodetabek sprawl east of Jakarta. It has almost no old town and no beach: the draw is shopping malls, roadside food and hotels that undercut central Jakarta. Most travellers pass through on the commuter line or sleep here before an early flight from Halim.

Getting around

Taxis and app ride-hailing (Grab, Gojek) are the practical choice; ranks sit outside malls and hotels. Angkot minibuses are cheapest (about Rp2,000–5,000) but have no fixed stops — shout "Kiri!" to get off. Becak and ojek cover short hops. The KRL commuter blue line links Bekasi, Kranji and Bekasi Timur stations with central Jakarta.

Watch out

Safety

Bekasi is a working city, not a tourist one: petty theft and snatch theft on the street are the realistic risks, plus traffic and wet-season flooding. Keep bags zipped, use app rides at night, and drink bottled water.
  • Traffic is the main cost: allow 1–2 h to Soekarno-Hatta and 1 h+ into central Jakarta.
  • Commuter trains at peak hours are extremely crowded; avoid 06:00–09:00 and 16:00–19:00 with luggage.
  • Flooding closes some roads in the Dec–Feb wet season.
  • Use metered taxis or app rides; agree the fare before any unmarked car.
