Modica
Give Modica one night, two if you want the chocolate and the upper town without rushing: it is a half-day town that eats a full day.
Modica is one of the eight late-baroque towns of the Val di Noto, split into a low main street (Modica Bassa) and a steep older quarter above it (Modica Alta). The 1693 earthquake flattened it and the rebuild left two big churches, a chocolate tradition and a river-turned-boulevard. Trains are slow and rare, so most visitors arrive by car or bus and stay one night.
