Ragusa is two towns on two hilltops joined by a bridge and a staircase: Ragusa Superiore, rebuilt on a grid after the 1693 earthquake, and Ragusa Ibla, the old town below, where the baroque churches and palaces stand. Almost everything you came for is in Ibla, and Ibla is all slopes and steps. Two nights is the working answer: one day for Ibla, one for a baroque neighbour by train.

Getting around

On foot inside each half of town, by bus between them. Ibla and Superiore sit on separate hilltops: walking down is easy, walking back up is a climb of several hundred steps or a steep lane. City buses run from Nodo Zama (next to the intercity bus station) and Nodo Piazza del Popolo (next to the railway station); buses 11 and 33 head towards Ibla roughly hourly until about 21:00, with line 1 on Sundays and holidays and line 3 at night. A day pass is about €2 (2026 estimate). Taxis wait at Piazza della Repubblica at the edge of Ibla and at the train station. Trains are the way to the neighbouring baroque towns.

Watch out

Safety

Ragusa is a calm, low-crime town; the real risks are the steps and slopes of Ibla, summer heat, and driving into lanes that are not meant for cars. Keep normal city sense after dark and you are fine.
  • Ibla is a hill of steps and slopes: comfortable shoes, and plan the uphill leg rather than improvising it at night.
  • Trains on the Ragusa line do not run on Sundays; check the day's timetable before you build a plan around one.
  • Comiso airport has no bus service — a taxi or rental car is the only way out.
  • Summer afternoons in Ibla are hot and the tour groups are thick; do the churches before 11:00 or after 16:00.
  • Restaurant kitchens in Ibla close between lunch and dinner; late arrivals eat at whatever is still serving.
