Carraroe (An Cheathrú Rua) is the largest village on its own peninsula in west Connemara, about 75 minutes by bus from Galway. It is a Gaeltacht village where Irish is the everyday language for most residents, and the reason to come is the landscape: maerl (coral) beaches, a causeway road across the Ceantar na nOileán islands, and quiet pubs. There is no town centre to browse; you need a car, a bike or patience with a sparse bus.

Getting around
Bus 424 runs roughly hourly from Galway via Salthill, Spiddal, Inverin and Rossaveel to Carraroe (about 75 min), with a few daily extensions to Lettermore and Lettermullan. Everything else needs a car or bike: the R343 runs down the peninsula to the village, the R374 crosses the island chain west, and lanes to the beaches are narrow with dry-stone walls and no footpath.
