Garut is a highland town in the Parahyangan region, about 2 hours from Bandung over the Nagreg pass. The town itself is a market and dodol-and-leather stop; the reasons to sleep here are outside it — the Cipanas hot springs, the Papandayan crater walk and Cangkuang temple. Two nights covers the core; three if you add a volcano climb. Traffic on the pass is the main planning risk, and the rainy season closes trails.

Getting around

Angkot minivans cover the city and nearby villages; andong horse carriages are for short hops. For Cipanas, Cangkuang, Papandayan or Kamojang you need an ojek, a hired car or a tour — there is no useful public transport to the trailheads. Distances are short but roads are slow.

The town's original draw: sulphur pools at the foot of Mount Guntur. Go early or late; midday is crowded.

Candi Cangkuang

Small 8th-century Hindu temple on an island in a lake; one of the few in West Java. Half a day with the village.

Mount Papandayan

Walk across the crater past steam vents and bubbling mud. Start at first light; check the alert level.

Mount Guntur

Watch out

Safety

Garut is a normal Indonesian highland town: petty theft is the realistic risk, not violence. The bigger hazards are the Nagreg pass in traffic, wet-season landslides, and active volcanoes — check the alert level before any climb.
  • Nagreg pass traffic can add hours; leave Bandung before 07:00 or after 20:00.
  • Rainy season brings landslides and road closures on the pass and on volcano roads.
  • Papandayan and Guntur are active volcanoes: check the current alert level before climbing.
  • Hot springs are hot — test before children get in.
  • Bring cash; many small shops and ojeks do not take cards.
