Zamora

Give Zamora one night, two if you want every Romanesque church: the walled old town is a 3-hour walk, so it works as a stop between Salamanca and León.

Rules in force · 9Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
  • Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
  • Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
  • Spain ↗Spain is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Spain ↗High-speed trains have airport-style baggage screening at the station and boarding gates that close a few minutes before departure: arrive early.
  • Spain ↗Carry your passport or ID: police may ask for it, and hotels must register every guest's document.
  • Spain ↗The Alhambra in Granada and the Sagrada Família in Barcelona sell timed tickets that sell out weeks ahead in season; book on the official sites before you fix your dates.

Zamora sits on a rock above the Douro at 650 m, on the Vía de la Plata between Salamanca and León. Its old town holds one of Spain's densest runs of Romanesque churches inside walls that still stand, and it takes about half a day to walk. Most travellers pass through on the train from Madrid to Galicia, or break the Salamanca–León drive here.

Watch out

Safety

Zamora is a calm, low-crime small city; the real issues are summer heat, uneven cobbles, and the Douro current if you swim. Standard city care at night around the bars.
  • Summer afternoons hit 35 °C+; walk churches before 13:00 and after 18:00.
  • Many churches keep short, split hours and close one weekday: check each one before you plan a route.
  • Puente de Piedra has been closed for repair at times; check before counting on the river crossing.
  • Swimming at Pelambres beach on the Douro: the current is strong.

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Zamora. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

  1. Best months: Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct · avoid Jul–Aug (inland heat, 35 °C+), late Dec · month by month →
  2. 3 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 5 day-trips, door to door
  6. 4 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for MAD: last train from Madrid-Chamartín, bus fallback, station-to-centre taxi rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: cathedral and castle, Plaza Mayor, San Pedro and Rúa los Francos, riverbank and Olivares.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (cathedral, Baltasar Lobo museum, castle, Ethnographic Museum) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Church-hours fixture so the Romanesque route can go green only when the doors are open.
