Salamanca

Give Salamanca 2 nights: the old town is a 20-minute walk end to end, so one full day plus a half-day covers it. Skip the car.

Rules in force · 9Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
  • Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
  • Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
  • Spain ↗Spain is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Spain ↗High-speed trains have airport-style baggage screening at the station and boarding gates that close a few minutes before departure: arrive early.
  • Spain ↗Carry your passport or ID: police may ask for it, and hotels must register every guest's document.
  • Spain ↗The Alhambra in Granada and the Sagrada Família in Barcelona sell timed tickets that sell out weeks ahead in season; book on the official sites before you fix your dates.

Salamanca is a compact university city in Castile and León, 1 h 40 min by train from Madrid, with a UNESCO-listed old town built from Villamayor sandstone that turns gold at sunset. Two nights is enough for the cathedrals, the university and Plaza Mayor, with a half-day left for the river or a museum. Most visitors arrive by train or bus and walk everywhere.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Walk. The main attractions sit close together and are easy on foot; Plaza Mayor to the cathedrals is about 10 minutes. City buses run to the train and bus stations and cost a few euros paid to the driver; bus 1 links the train station with Plaza Poeta Iglesias next to Plaza Mayor. Taxis wait at ranks and can be called by app; pay in cash at the end of the ride.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Ávila

go

Door to door: About 2 h

Train from Salamanca station, about 1 h 30 min

Walled city; a full day, or stop en route to or from Madrid.

Zamora

go

Door to door: About 2–2.5 h

Train or bus, roughly 1 h 30 min–2 h

Romanesque churches and a quiet old town; works as a day trip.

Valladolid

caution

Door to door: About 2 h

Avanza bus every two hours, about 90 min

Better as a stop on the way north than a return day trip.

Madrid

skip

Door to door: About 2 h 30 min

Alvia train from Salamanca, about 1 h 40 min via Segovia

Too far for a day; use it as your arrival or departure leg instead.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Old town around Plaza Mayor

Everything walkable; noisier at night, higher prices. Best for a first visit of 1–2 nights.

Cathedral and university quarter

Quietest central option, 5–10 min walk from Plaza Mayor; good for couples and short stays.

Around the train and bus stations

Cheaper and practical for early departures; the stations sit about 1 km from the centre, so expect a 10–15 min walk to the sights.

Van Dyck and north of the centre

Local tapas strip and cheaper rooms, about 1 km north of Plaza Mayor.

Watch out

Safety

Salamanca is a low-risk city; the usual pickpocket caution applies around Plaza Mayor and the market, and summer heat is the real hazard. Use 112 for any emergency.
  • Summer afternoons are genuinely hot inland; shift sightseeing to morning and evening.
  • Many churches and museums close for a long midday break and shut one day a week — check each site before you walk over.
  • Restaurants on Plaza Mayor charge for the location; the better value is one or two streets back.
  • The train station has no left luggage; the bus terminal does, so head there if you need to store bags.

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Salamanca. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct · avoid Jul–Aug (inland heat, 35 °C+), Christmas and Easter weeks (university city, hotels fill) · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 4 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 4 day-trips, door to door
  6. 4 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for MAD: last train and bus times field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Plaza Mayor, the cathedrals and university, Casa de las Conchas and La Clerecía, the Roman Bridge and Casa Lis.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (cathedrals, university, Casa Lis, San Esteban) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Summer-heat and Easter-week fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
