Salamanca

Salamanca is a compact university city in Castile and León, 1 h 40 min by train from Madrid, with a UNESCO-listed old town built from Villamayor sandstone that turns gold at sunset. Two nights is enough for the cathedrals, the university and Plaza Mayor, with a half-day left for the river or a museum. Most visitors arrive by train or bus and walk everywhere.

Get around
Walk. The main attractions sit close together and are easy on foot; Plaza Mayor to the cathedrals is about 10 minutes. City buses run to the train and bus stations and cost a few euros paid to the driver; bus 1 links the train station with Plaza Poeta Iglesias next to Plaza Mayor. Taxis wait at ranks and can be called by app; pay in cash at the end of the ride.
