Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Drymen is a village of about 830 people inside Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, 4 miles from the east shore of the loch. It is the first real village on the West Highland Way after Milngavie, so most visitors are walkers breaking stage 1, or drivers using it as a quiet, cheaper base for the loch's east side. There is little to see in the village itself: the draw is the walking, the glen and the distillery south of it.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The village is small enough to walk end to end in about 10 minutes. For the glen, the loch shore and the distillery you need a car, a bike or a taxi; buses are limited to the McColls 309 route.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 30 min

McColls bus 309 from The Square, about 15 min, or drive the B837

Conic Hill is best climbed from Balmaha, not Drymen; the view over Loch Lomond is the reason to come.

Glengoyne Distillery

go

Door to door: About 15 min

Drive the A81 south, about 6 miles

Tours are timed and sell out; book ahead. Basic tour from £18.

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive the A811 east, about 30 min

Castle on a crag and a compact old town; a half day is enough.

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive the A811 to the A82, or the 309 bus

South end of the loch, more shops and train links to Glasgow.

Glasgow

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Drive via Balloch and the A82, or bus to Balloch then train

Doable but a long day; better as a stop on the way in or out.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

The Square and Main St

Village centre: inns, B&Bs and the bus stop, all walkable. Best for one night with bags.

Balmaha Rd (northwest edge)

Quieter B&Bs a few minutes' walk from the centre, on the way out toward the loch.

Gartness Rd (southeast)

Campsite about a mile from the village on the West Highland Way; open Apr–Oct, dogs welcome.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime village; the real risks are wet, steep ground at Finnich Glen, fast traffic on the A811 and A809, and weather that turns on the hills.
  • Buses are infrequent: the 309 runs roughly every 90 min from Balloch via Drymen to Balmaha, so check the last return before you set out.
  • Finnich Glen is reached down a steep staircase that is slippery when wet; the glen and its steps have been damaged by heavy footfall and access can be restricted.
  • Buchanan Castle is a fenced-off ruin on unstable ground: view it from the lane, do not enter.
  • Catter Law is on private land and has been much altered; there is no public access.
  • Mobile coverage is 4G at best in the village and on approach roads; expect gaps on the walking routes.

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Drymen. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for GLA and EDI: last bus and train times field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Walking clusters with rescue anchors: The Square, Balmaha Rd, the West Highland Way exit, the glen car park.
  3. Place pages with verified access notes (Finnich Glen steps, Buchanan Castle fence line, RSPB Loch Lomond car park) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Weather and midge fixtures so walking days can go green or be swapped for Stirling.
