Trowbridge is the county town of Wiltshire and was a major West Country textile centre in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, once called the Manchester of the West. The mills are gone; what remains is a compact town centre, a good local museum, the Kennet and Avon Canal to the north, and a rail line that puts Bath about 30 minutes away. Most travellers use it as a cheap bed for Bath and Bradford on Avon, or as a two-hour stop between them.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Trowbridge station sits on the Wessex Main Line between Bristol and Southampton, with Great Western Railway services; Bradford on Avon is one stop, Bath a few more. Buses and the A350/A361 cover the surrounding villages. A car helps for Stonehenge, Avebury and the canal villages.

Safety

A low-risk small English town. The real issues are the usual ones: unlit towpaths after dark, weekend drinkers around the town centre, and thin late transport back from Bath.
  • This is a working town, not a sightseeing town: two hours covers the centre.
  • Sunday and evening food options are thin; the St Stephen's Place chains and a few independents carry most of it.
  • The canal is a walk or short drive north of the centre, not on the doorstep.
  • Check museum opening days before you travel: it has been closed for refurbishment at times.
