Trowbridge
Skip as a base: Trowbridge is a half-day county town. Come for the museum and the canal, then sleep in Bradford on Avon or Bath.
Trowbridge is the county town of Wiltshire and was a major West Country textile centre in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, once called the Manchester of the West. The mills are gone; what remains is a compact town centre, a good local museum, the Kennet and Avon Canal to the north, and a rail line that puts Bath about 30 minutes away. Most travellers use it as a cheap bed for Bath and Bradford on Avon, or as a two-hour stop between them.

Trowbridge station sits on the Wessex Main Line between Bristol and Southampton, with Great Western Railway services; Bradford on Avon is one stop, Bath a few more.
