  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Fullerton is an inland Orange County city of about 140,000, 15 minutes north of Disneyland up Harbor Boulevard and on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink lines. Its draw is a compact historic downtown of bars, restaurants and small museums, plus the Fullerton Arboretum and the general-aviation airport. Most visitors pass through on the train; a night or two suits anyone who wants Orange County without Anaheim's park crowds.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to cover Fullerton: downtown, the arboretum and the airport sit 3–5 km apart. OCTA buses serve the city and meet at the Fullerton Transportation Center, and about 45 km of recreational trails cross the city, but neither replaces a car for errands. Rideshares and taxis are easy downtown at night.

Watch out

Safety

Fullerton is generally safe by US city standards; the practical risks are weekend bar crowds downtown, summer inland heat and freeway traffic. Use normal city care after dark and keep valuables out of sight in parked cars.
  • Downtown bar crowds peak 21:00–02:00 on weekends; watch drinks and keep to lit streets.
  • Summer inland heat: 32–38 °C afternoons in Jul–Sep.
  • Parking in downtown Fullerton is enforced; read signs before leaving the car.
  • Regional traffic on I-5, the 91 and the 57 can double short drives at rush hour.
