Sylvan Lake
Go for one summer day on the lake, or one night if you want the beach at sunset: 25 min west of Red Deer, no train, car only.
Sylvan Lake is a town of about 15,000 on a 15 km freshwater lake, 25 km west of Red Deer and roughly midway between Calgary and Edmonton. It draws over a million visitors a year, almost all in July and August, for the beach, the pier and the water. Outside summer it is a quiet small town with a golf course and a microbrewery. There is no rail link and no useful bus from the airports, so you need a car.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: the town is spread along the lake and the highway. Downtown, Lakeshore Drive and the beach are walkable in 10–15 minutes. Parking near the beach fills by mid-morning on summer weekends. Taxis are limited; there is no local bus service worth planning around.
