Northern Alberta is the top half of the province: boreal forest, the Peace River farmland, the oil sands around Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo National Park, one of the largest protected boreal areas on earth. There is no inter-town bus network, so a rented or shared car is the only practical way to move. Base in Edmonton or Grande Prairie and treat the region as a road trip, not a city break. Two or three nights only works if you pick one corner; four to seven nights lets you link the Peace Country with Lesser Slave Lake or push to Fort McMurray.
