Bojonegoro is a regency town in East Java, about 100 km west of Surabaya, on the main Jakarta–Surabaya railway. It is a working town of tobacco, teak and, since the 2005 oil discoveries, a small petroleum boom. Sights are few and spread out: an eternal flame in a teak forest, a Confucian temple, a town square, and a century-old traditional oil field at Wonocolo. Most travellers use it as a rail stop or a short detour between Surabaya, Ngawi and Tuban.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre (Jalan Untung Suropati / Diponegoro)

Budget hotels, walkable to the alun-alun and the Confucian temple; best for one night without a car.

Rajekwesi bus terminal area (Jalan Veteran)

Mid-range hotels next to the terminal and the north–south road; convenient if you arrive or leave by bus.

Jalan M.H. Thamrin / west side

Quieter mid-range option, a short becak ride from the square.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet regency town and generally safe by day; the real risks are becak and ojek fares with no posted price, unlit roads out to Kayangan Api and Wonocolo at night, and rainy-season flooding. Ask the total before you sit.
  • No taxis and few English speakers: have your hotel address written down.
  • Agree becak and ojek fares before you get in.
  • Kayangan Api and Wonocolo are 20–30 km out on small roads: do not plan them for a tight connection.
  • Rainy season can flood low roads; check conditions before a long scooter ride.
  • Wonocolo is an active oil field: stay on the marked paths and away from equipment.
