Chesapeake CityChesapeake City, Maryland

Go for one night, not a week: a walkable canal town of 673 people where the draw is a B&B, a waterfront dinner and a boat ride.

Chesapeake City sits on the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal in Maryland's Eastern Shore, about an hour from Baltimore and Philadelphia. Downtown is a short stretch of 19th-century houses on the south bank, now B&Bs, restaurants and a small museum. One night covers it; two if you want a slow morning and a canal-side lunch. It works as a stop between the Eastern Shore and the I-95 corridor, not as a destination on its own.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable in about 10 minutes end to end, and there is a pedestrian walkway on the bridge over the canal. Everything else — the brewery, the library, the C&D Canal Museum — is on or off MD-213 and needs a car. No local bus service worth planning around.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 45 min

Car via MD-213 and MD-291, about 40 min

Bigger historic downtown, more restaurants and a riverfront; pairs well with a Chesapeake City night.

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Car via US-50 east, about 1 h 30 min

A full day on the lower Eastern Shore; combine with Blackwater refuge.

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Car via US-50 and MD-33, about 1 h 30 min

Maritime museum and a walkable harbour; better as an overnight than a rushed return.

Door to door: About 1 h

Car via US-50 and US-301, about 1 h

Mostly a highway and marina stop; go only if you are already crossing the Bay Bridge.

Rock Hall

caution

Door to door: About 1.25 h

Car via MD-213 and MD-20, about 1 h 15 min

Sailing town with a small waterfront; thin on things to do outside summer weekends.

Door to door: About 3 h

Car via US-50 east and MD-90, about 2 h 45 min

Too far for a day return; sleep there if you want the beach.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a town this size; the real risks are dark rural roads at night, deer on MD-213 and unfenced canal edges. Lock your car and keep to lit streets after the restaurants close.
  • Weekend B&Bs and waterfront tables fill up; book ahead for Fri–Sat.
  • Many kitchens close by 21:00 and some places shut midweek in winter: check before you drive.
  • The town is small and quiet — do not arrive expecting nightlife.
  • Canal and marina edges are unfenced in places; watch children near the water.
