Chesapeake City
Chesapeake City, Maryland
Go for one night, not a week: a walkable canal town of 673 people where the draw is a B&B, a waterfront dinner and a boat ride.
Chesapeake City sits on the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal in Maryland's Eastern Shore, about an hour from Baltimore and Philadelphia. Downtown is a short stretch of 19th-century houses on the south bank, now B&Bs, restaurants and a small museum. One night covers it; two if you want a slow morning and a canal-side lunch. It works as a stop between the Eastern Shore and the I-95 corridor, not as a destination on its own.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Weekend B&Bs and waterfront tables fill up; book ahead for Fri–Sat.
- Many kitchens close by 21:00 and some places shut midweek in winter: check before you drive.
- The town is small and quiet — do not arrive expecting nightlife.
- Canal and marina edges are unfenced in places; watch children near the water.
Very safe for a town this size; the real risks are dark rural roads at night, deer on MD-213 and unfenced canal edges. Lock your car and keep to lit streets after the restaurants close.
