  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • East Africa ↗Carry the yellow fever certificate on every leg of a multi-country trip: Uganda and Burundi check it for all arrivals, and a stop in Kenya or Ethiopia makes the next border ask for it.
  • East Africa ↗Advice for Ethiopia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and the Congo border areas can change within days; read your government's page the week you fly and before every regional flight.
  • East Africa ↗Price park, reserve and permit fees before comparing lodges: they are charged per person per day, often with VAT, and are fixed whatever bed you choose.
  • Tanzania ↗Apply for the Tanzania e-visa only on the official immigration portal; Zanzibar and, from 1 October 2026, mainland Tanzania each require their own US$44 inbound insurance bought from the state insurer's site.
  • Tanzania ↗Carry a yellow fever certificate if you arrive from or connect through a risk country such as Kenya or Ethiopia; see a travel clinic about malaria several weeks ahead.
  • Tanzania ↗Plastic carrier bags are banned; leave shop and duty-free plastic bags behind before you arrive.
  • Tanzania ↗Light aircraft between parks and to Zanzibar have strict baggage limits, usually soft-sided bags only and a low total weight (often around 15 kg); confirm the limit with your operator.

Mtwara is a southern port town built for a groundnut scheme that never happened, so it stayed low and spread out. Travellers come for two things: diving and snorkelling around Mnazi Bay, and Makonde carving, which is still made here. It is a working Tanzanian town first, a beach destination second, and it pairs with Mikindani next door rather than replacing it.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The town is spread out, so plan on bajaji (three-wheel taxi) or pikipiki (motorbike taxi) for anything beyond one neighbourhood. Bicycles can be hired from the market area for a few thousand shillings a day. Walking works in daylight between the market, bus stand and Bima; after dark take a vehicle.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Mikindani

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Bajaji or taxi from central Mtwara, about 20 min

Old port town with the fort and the better lodges; easy half day, or sleep there instead.

Lindi

caution

Door to door: 2–3 h

Bus from Mtwara, morning departures

Worth it only if you are continuing north; the afternoon option means changing at Mnazi Mmoja.

Masasi

overnight

Door to door: 4–5 h

Bus from Mtwara, last departure mid-afternoon

Too far for a return day; go if you are heading inland.

Dar es Salaam

overnight

Door to door: About 8 h by road

Bus from Ubungo, Temeke or Mbagala, or a domestic flight

Buses leave around 6am; the flight is short but schedules are unreliable.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Shangani / sea front

The main traveller area, walkable to the water and the one Western-menu restaurant; a taxi or bajaji is easier after dark.

Around the bus stand

Cheapest guest houses, market and evening food stalls on the doorstep; noisy and busy from early morning.

Mikindani (20 min by road)

Old German-era port town with the better-known lodges; use it as a base if you want quiet and sea views.

Watch out

Safety

Mtwara is generally a safe town; the real risk is being on an empty residential street after dark. If people are around it is usually fine, if it is deserted take a bajaji or taxi.
  • Take a vehicle after dark, especially in residential streets away from the centre.
  • The Dar es Salaam road can flood in the rainy season: journeys get much longer, not cancelled.
  • Bus operators on the Dar route change often; buy at the station on the day and pick a four-seat-row bus.
  • Diving and boat trips depend on sea conditions and operator availability — confirm before you build a day around it.
