Bath is North Carolina's oldest town, founded in 1705 and the colony's first port of entry and capital until 1722. The whole historic district is about 1.5 km of flat streets on Bath Creek: three houses, a church and a visitor centre. Two to three hours covers it; most travellers base in Washington (25 min) or New Bern (45 min) and visit as a half-day.

Getting around

You need a car. There is no public transit in Bath and no rail link; US-264 is the only road in from Washington. Inside town everything is walkable: the historic district is about 1.5 km from the Bonner House to the visitor centre on flat streets, with free parking at the Historic Bath site on Carteret Street.
