Greenville, North CarolinaGreenville

Give Greenville one night if you are passing between Raleigh and the Outer Banks; two nights only if you are here for ECU sport or a Tar River weekend.

Greenville is the hub of North Carolina's Inner Banks: East Carolina University, a compact downtown on the Tar River and a lot of green space. It is not a sightseeing city. Come for a college game, a river walk and a cheap hotel night between Raleigh and the coast, and you have seen it.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the default: sights, hotels and restaurants sit 5–10 minutes apart and buses are thin. GREAT city buses run fixed routes at $1.00 a ride with free transfers (check current routes). ECU runs its own campus bus system, open to visitors.

Watch out

Safety

Greenville is a normal US college town: daytime downtown and campus are fine, and the usual advice applies after dark — stay in lit areas, keep car doors locked, and do not leave anything visible in a parked car.
  • Not the Greenville in South Carolina — check the state code before you book a hotel or flight.
  • Summer heat and humidity; plan outdoor time before 11:00.
  • Hurricane season runs Aug–Oct: watch forecasts if you are driving to the coast.
  • Ride-hailing is available but thin late at night; have a taxi number.
