Jabalpur is a working central-Indian city on the Narmada, and the reason to come is 25 km out of town: Bhedaghat, where the river runs between white marble cliffs and then drops as Dhuandhar Falls. The city itself holds a Gond hill fort, a Kalchuri temple and riverside ghats. Two nights covers it; most travellers pass through on the way to Kanha, Bandhavgarh or Pachmarhi.

Getting around

Cycle rickshaws and auto-rickshaws cover the city centre cheaply; agree the fare or insist on the meter before you sit. For Bhedaghat, Bargi or Dumna, hire a car with driver for the day — taxis wait at the railway station and hotels. City buses are crowded and hard to read for a short visit.

Watch out

Safety

Jabalpur is generally calm for visitors; the real risks are heat, monsoon-season boat closures and unlicensed taxis quoting inflated fares. Use 112 in an emergency.
  • Bhedaghat boat rides are suspended through the monsoon, roughly July to September: check before you commit a day.
  • The Marble Rocks are a shared-boat operation: confirm the price per head and the duration before boarding.
  • Summer heat from April is severe; plan outdoor sights before 10:00.
  • Drinking alcohol is frowned on in many local households and the legal age is 18; keep it to hotels and bars.
  • Temple and ghat visits: dress modestly and ask before photographing people at worship.
