Zanesville

One night, or a half-day stop off I-70: the Y-Bridge, the art museum and pottery outlets fill 3–4 hours, not a weekend.

Zanesville is a small Ohio city on I-70, about an hour east of Columbus, known for its Y-shaped bridge and two centuries of pottery and china making. Downtown holds the historic buildings and museums; the rest is spread along the highway exits. Most travellers pass through on the drive between Columbus and Wheeling, or stop for a night on the way to Southeast Ohio.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights sit along I-70 and SR 40/60, and downtown parking is easy. SEAT runs local buses, but routes and hours are limited — check the current timetable before relying on them. Greyhound stops at the Main St terminal downtown.

Watch out

Safety

Zanesville is a small city with typical US small-city crime: most visits are trouble-free, but lock the car, keep valuables out of sight and stay on lit downtown streets at night.
  • Winter ice and snow on I-70 and the SR 60 hills; allow extra time.
  • Some downtown blocks are quiet after dark — stay on lit streets.
  • Small museums keep short, seasonal hours: check before you drive out.
  • Pottery outlet hours vary by shop; call ahead for factory tours.
