Havelock

Stay one night if you are driving Nelson–Blenheim, or use it as a half-day stop for the mussel cruise and Pelorus Sound mail boat.

Havelock is a small marina town on State Highway 6, 30 minutes from Blenheim and 45 from Nelson, and the main road gateway to Pelorus Sound. It is known as the green-shell mussel capital, and its two real draws are the water: a mussel cruise and the Pelorus mail boat. The town itself is a short walk.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
  • New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
  • New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.

Getting around

The town is walkable in 10 minutes. For Pelorus Sound you need a water taxi, the mail boat or a cruise, all leaving from the marina. A car is needed for Pelorus Bridge, the Nydia Track ends and the wider Marlborough Sounds.

Watch out

Safety

Havelock is a small, low-crime town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are the roads: State Highway 6 traffic, one-lane bridges and the narrow, winding Queen Charlotte Drive.
  • Queen Charlotte Drive to Picton is narrow and winding: allow 1 h and drive it in daylight.
  • The Pelorus Mail Boat runs only Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; book ahead.
  • The Greenshell Mussel Cruise runs 1 Nov–31 Mar only.
  • Fuel and food options are limited: fill up in Blenheim or Nelson.
