Dongguan东莞
Skip Dongguan as a base unless you are here for work or the Opium Wars sites: give Humen one full day, or pass through between Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
Dongguan is a manufacturing city of over 8 million people that produces a large share of the world's smartphones and shoes, and it is not built for tourists. Its one strong sight line is in Humen Town, where the Opium Wars museums and forts sit within a few kilometres of each other. Most travellers pass through on the rail line between Guangzhou and Shenzhen, or use it as a cheaper bed near Shenzhen.

- East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
- East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
- China ↗Most nationalities need a visa, a unilateral visa-free entry (the list and end dates change) or the transit exemption below. Confirm your route on the official sites before you buy a ticket.
- China ↗Transit stay without a visa: up to 240 hours (10 days) for citizens of about 55 listed countries who pass through China to a third country or region, with a confirmed onward ticket and a stay inside the permitted area (Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei count as one area). It replaced the 144-hour rule in December 2024, which some older pages still quote. Use the transit lane at immigration, show the onward ticket, and check the current nationality list. Hong Kong and Macau count as separate regions; check whether your ticket qualifies.
- China ↗Foreign visitors must register their address with the police within 24 hours; hotels do it at check-in with your passport. Carry the original passport at all times: hotels, trains, museums, Tiananmen Square and police checks ask for it.
- China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
- China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Getting around
Dongguan is car-centric and spread across townships, so ride-hailing is the default for visitors; taxis are scarce in some towns. Metro Line 2 links Dongguan Railway Station with Humen, and Line 1 opened in 2025. Buses cost about ¥2 but run sparsely and announce stops in Mandarin and Cantonese only.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Nancheng (city centre)
Metro Line 2, the exhibition centre, library and main bus terminal; the most practical base without a car.
Guancheng
Old town around Keyuan Garden and the Ying'en Gate Tower; walkable core, fewer hotels.
Humen Town
Best for the Opium Wars sites and the high-speed rail station; a night here saves the cross-city trip.
Changping
Rail hub for Dongguan East and Changping stations; useful if you arrive from elsewhere in China.

Watch out
Safety
- Distances between towns are long: a 30-minute taxi ride runs about ¥80 (≈ US$12), so group your sights by township.
- Use only blue or yellow licensed taxis if you hail one.
- Humen's Opium Wars museums and forts are free but need online registration; closed Tuesdays at some sites.
- Summer brings heavy rain and typhoons; check forecasts before a hiking day.
- Most staff outside hotels speak little English: have place names written in Chinese.
