  • Caribbean ↗Several islands (Turks and Caicos above all, also the Bahamas and Jamaica) jail visitors for a single stray bullet or cartridge in their luggage; empty every bag and pocket before you pack.
  • Caribbean ↗From August to October keep a free last day before your flight home and check the national hurricane centre daily; airports close when a named storm approaches.
  • Caribbean ↗Wearing camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in several islands, including Barbados, Antigua, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Grenada, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica; leave it at home, children's clothes included.
  • Jamaica ↗Check entry rules for your passport on Jamaica's Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) site before you fly.
  • Jamaica ↗Cannabis rules are limited and specific: possession above small amounts is illegal, and taking any cannabis out of Jamaica is a serious offence.
  • Jamaica ↗Use licensed taxis (red PPV number plates) or pre-booked transfers, not unmarked cars.
  • Jamaica ↗After Hurricane Melissa, confirm directly with hotels, tour operators and attractions in Westmoreland, St Elizabeth, Hanover, St James and Trelawny that they are open before you pay; some reopen only in late 2026.
  • Kingston and the Blue Mountains ↗Mountain roads are narrow and steep: use a driver who knows them, and start early because cloud and rain build by afternoon.

Decide

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go

Overview

The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.

Kingston is hot, hilly and spread out, and public transport is for locals. The plans that work use one base in New Kingston, book a licensed taxi or hotel driver for every leg, and keep to the mornings for anything outdoors. Four clusters cover a first visit: New Kingston, Hope Road, Downtown and Hope Gardens. The Blue Mountains are a full-day trip from one kept bed.

Fits

  • Music and history trips
  • Short capital stops before or after the coast
  • Travellers who book drivers

Does not fit

  • Walk-everywhere travellers
  • Strollers and wheelchairs (pavements)
  • Anyone who wants a beach on the doorstep

Don't confuse
New Kingston is a business and hotel district, not the old Downtown centre; Half Way Tree is a separate hub in between.
Where’s whatTap an area for what it is like and who it suits. Shapes follow this guide’s walking areas and places, not official boundaries.
Hope Road guesthouses · $$New Kingston hotels · $$$

Hover, tap or tab to an area to see what it is like. Pins are sleep areas; arrows at the edge point to the airport.

Off the map: Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) (45–70 min by the usual route).

Where’s what, as a list:

  • New Kingston: Evening-friendly base cluster: hotels, restaurants and Emancipation Park within a few blocks; the only cluster you can walk after dark, and even then keep to the main roads.
  • Hope Road (Devon House & Bob Marley Museum): Morning-to-lunch cluster: the Marley museum tour at a set time, Devon House grounds and the ice-cream stop; two stops a short taxi apart, not a walk in the heat.
  • Downtown Kingston (Parade & waterfront): Morning-only cluster: the National Gallery on the waterfront, then out; arrive and leave by taxi, do not wander, and be back in New Kingston by early afternoon.
  • Hope Gardens & Papine: Half-day cluster on the foot of the hills: botanical gardens in the morning before the heat, Papine market beyond; the gate for the Blue Mountains road.
  • Sleep area Hope Road guesthouses: suits Families, older travellers, price band $$.
  • Sleep area New Kingston hotels: suits Families, older travellers, price band $$$.
  • Norman Manley International Airport (KIN), 45–70 min by the usual route.

Decide

The honest trade-off: what you will enjoy, what will wear you down.

You will like

  • Music history
  • Devon House and the gardens
  • A calmer, working capital

You will hate

  • Heat and traffic
  • Needing a taxi for every trip
  • Areas with no safe evening walk

Arrive & move

Getting in, getting around, and your bags

Arrive

Gateways

Each gateway has its own airport-to-bed page with timings and the last safe connection.

Move

The default way around, when a pass pays off, and when the last trains go.

Default
Walk inside New Kingston; hotel-booked driver or licensed taxi between clusters.
Passes
No pass. Agree the fare before you ride or use the driver your hotel recommends; ask for a number to call back.
Last trains
No rail. Taxis run late but fewer stop after dark: book the return before you leave.

Luggage

Where big bags are a problem, and how to get rid of them for the day.

Rule

Between clusters use a hotel-booked driver or a licensed taxi; do not walk between clusters, and do not use unmarked cars or minibuses as a visitor.
Lockers
No public lockers; hotels hold bags after check-out.
Forwarding
No forwarding culture: keep the big bag at the New Kingston hotel for trips away.
Dead zone
Late-flight day: ask the hotel to hold bags and keep a room or shower for the afternoon.
