Kingston

Kingston is a taxi city: base in New Kingston, do Hope Road and the gardens in the morning, Downtown only by day and by car, and keep a driver's number for every evening.

Kingston is hot, hilly and spread out, and public transport is for locals. The plans that work use one base in New Kingston, book a licensed taxi or hotel driver for every leg, and keep to the mornings for anything outdoors. Four clusters cover a first visit: New Kingston, Hope Road, Downtown and Hope Gardens. The Blue Mountains are a full-day trip from one kept bed.

Language

English is official and used on signs and in business; Jamaican Patois (Patwa) is what people speak to each other. Visitors are understood in English everywhere.

  • 'Wah gwaan' means what's going on; 'likkle more' means see you later; 'irie' means fine, good.
  • Say 'good morning' or 'good afternoon' first; skipping it reads as rude.

  • Hustlers: Polite, firm 'no thanks' and keep walking; avoid: Long negotiations you do not want
  • Photos: Ask; offer a small tip to vendors; avoid: Shooting people close-up uninvited
  • Dress: Cover up in town and churches; avoid: Swimwear off the beach

  • Do not walk between clusters, especially Downtown.
  • Ask before photographing people.

  • Unlicensed taxis: Red PPV plates, JUTA or hotel-booked cars only; agree the fare first.
  • Self-appointed guides: Firm 'no thanks'; book guides through the attraction.
  • 'Hurricane relief' donation pitches: Give through registered charities or your hotel's known programme.
  • Drug offers followed by police shakedown: Decline; buying from strangers is illegal and risky.
  • Currency switch: Say JMD or USD before agreeing a price and count change.
