Brielle is a small fortified town on the Zuid-Hollandse Eilanden with one of the densest monument counts in the Netherlands: a star-shaped 1713 wall ring, nine bastions, five ravelins and several original gates. The Capture of Brielle on 1 April 1572 opened the Dutch revolt against Spain, and the town still trades on that date. There is no train station, so you arrive by bus 403 from Spijkenisse metro. Come for the walls, the unfinished church tower and the museum; a full day is enough, and one night covers it comfortably.

Getting around

The historic core sits inside the walls and is walkable in 15–20 min end to end. Bikes, boats and paddle boats rent in the centre for the island polders and canals. No train station: R-net bus 403 runs frequently from Spijkenisse Centrum metro, about 1 h from Rotterdam city centre in total. By car, A15 exit 12, then N57 and N218, about 30 min from Rotterdam.

Safety

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are uneven wall paths, bikes on the narrow streets and missing the last bus 403 back to the metro.
  • No train station: the last bus 403 back to Spijkenisse metro sets your evening, so check the timetable before dinner.
  • Small-town opening hours: several shops and the antique dealer open afternoons only, and less in winter.
  • Museum and tower access can be limited outside the season; confirm before you travel.
  • Summer terraces and the harbour fill up on weekends; book a bed inside the walls ahead.
