Kandersteg is a 1,200-person farming village on the Lötschberg line, reached by train from Spiez in the north and Brig in the south (times: check). It is a hiking and cross-country base rather than a sightseeing town: the draw is Lake Oeschinen above the village, the road-free Gasterntal valley, and three cable cars. Two nights covers the main walks; one night is enough if you only ride the Oeschinen gondola.

Getting around

The village is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. In high season a local bus links the station with the Sunnbüel cable car and the Oeschinen gondola; it is free with the guest card from your accommodation. Trains run north to Spiez and Thun and south through the Lötschberg to Brig. A car-train shuttles between Kandersteg and Goppenstein for drivers.

Safety

Very safe for tourists. Real risks are mountain weather, unmarked trail junctions and cable-car closing times: tell someone your route, carry a charged phone and check the last descent.
  • Outside high season (roughly Mar–May and Oct–Dec) most hotels, shops and the tourist office close; KISC stays open and can give maps and information.
  • Only two ATMs in the village and card payment is not universal in small shops: carry cash.
  • Switzerland uses Swiss francs, not euros.
  • The Gasterntal is closed to general car traffic; take the bus or walk in.
  • Cable cars and the local bus run seasonal timetables: check the day's times before you set out.
