Newport is a single-street village of about 815 people on the north shore of Clew Bay, 11 km from Westport. Its value is position: the Great Western Greenway runs from Westport through Newport and on to Mulranny and Achill, Burrishoole Abbey and Rockfleet Castle are minutes away, and the road west to Mulranny, Ballycroy and Achill starts here. Two nights is plenty; one night plus a Westport base covers most trips.

Getting around
The village is one street and walkable. Everything else needs wheels: the Greenway is off-road and bike-hire is in Westport or Mulranny, and Bus Éireann 450 runs along the coast to Westport and Louisburgh (about 20 min) and north to Mulranny and Achill, roughly every 2–3 hours Monday–Saturday with only three Sunday services. A free summer bus runs twice daily Tuesday–Saturday from Westport via Newport to Mulranny, Ballycroy and Bangor Erris, June–August.

Safety
- Bus 450 is thin on Sundays: check the timetable before you build a day around it.
- Rockfleet Castle has no public access; view it from the lane and shore.
- Rosturk Castle is a private residence down a very narrow lane: skip it.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on the roads around the village; download maps and tickets before you leave Westport.
- No campsite or caravan park in Newport: the nearest is in Westport.
