Newport, County Mayo
Baile Uí Fhiacháin
Give Newport one night as a Greenway and Clew Bay base, not a destination: with no car, use it as a Westport day trip instead.
Newport is a single-street village of about 815 people on the north shore of Clew Bay, 11 km from Westport. Its value is position: the Great Western Greenway runs from Westport through Newport and on to Mulranny and Achill, Burrishoole Abbey and Rockfleet Castle are minutes away, and the road west to Mulranny, Ballycroy and Achill starts here. Two nights is plenty; one night plus a Westport base covers most trips.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, first names quickly; avoid: Over-formality; it reads as coldness
- Conversation: Banter, weather and sport; self-deprecating humour; avoid: Opening with Northern Ireland, religion or the Famine
- Pubs: Buy your round; chat at the bar; avoid: Leaving a round without buying one
- Identity: Say Ireland, or the Republic when you need to distinguish; avoid: 'Southern Ireland' and calling it British
- Driving: Lift a finger from the wheel to thank drivers who pull in for you; avoid: Stopping on narrow bends for photos
Scams and watch-outs
- Bus 450 is thin on Sundays: check the timetable before you build a day around it.
- Rockfleet Castle has no public access; view it from the lane and shore.
- Rosturk Castle is a private residence down a very narrow lane: skip it.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on the roads around the village; download maps and tickets before you leave Westport.
- No campsite or caravan park in Newport: the nearest is in Westport.
Crime is not the main concern in a village this size; the practical risks are single-track roads with no verge, Atlantic weather that can turn quickly, and tides and currents on Clew Bay. Walk facing traffic, carry a waterproof, and tell someone your route if you go into the hills.
