Leysin is a Vaud Alps village at about 1,250 m above Aigle, reached by a cog railway from the Rhône valley. It is a ski and hiking base with a cable car to the Berneuse, a revolving restaurant at the top, and a large student population from international schools. It is quieter and cheaper than Verbier or Zermatt, but the village bus runs only in season and the lifts are not a full high-Alps network.

Getting around

The TPC cog train from Aigle stops at Leysin-Village, Versmont, Leysin-Feydey and Leysin-Grand Hôtel. A free village navette runs about once an hour in the winter and summer seasons only; outside those dates you walk or take a taxi. The TeleLeysin cable car runs in both summer and winter.

Leysin is a small, low-crime mountain village; the real risks are winter road conditions, unmarked off-piste terrain and altitude. Tell someone your route and check the avalanche bulletin before going out.
  • The free village bus runs only in the winter and summer seasons; check dates before you rely on it.
  • The final road up has hairpin bends and winter conditions; snow chains or winter tyres are needed if you drive.
  • Parking near the ski lift is controlled and charged at weekends.
  • Some lifts, restaurants and hotels close in the shoulder months; confirm before booking.
