Wawa is a small former mining town on a lonely stretch of Highway 17, about 250 km north of Sault Ste. Marie and roughly 480 km east of Thunder Bay. There is no scheduled air service and buses run only a few days a week, so almost everyone arrives by car. The town answers one question well: a safe bed, a hot meal and a full tank before the empty road north to White River.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk; Mission Road holds most of what a visitor needs. A demand-response municipal bus runs Monday to Friday, roughly 8:45AM to 2:45PM, and must be booked by phone in advance. Wawa Taxi covers the rest. A car is required for the falls, the parks and anything outside town.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are fuel, distance and weather. Fill up before 9PM, carry water, and treat winter driving on Highway 17 with respect.
  • No 24-hour fuel in Wawa: most stations close around 9PM. The nearest all-night fill is about 90 km north in White River.
  • The Circle-K in town does not sell fuel, whatever your map app says.
  • Mobile signal drops fast outside town: patchy north to White River, very poor south through Lake Superior Provincial Park, and gone about 20 km east on Highway 101.
  • Hitchhiking out of Wawa is unreliable: easy to reach, hard to leave.
  • Winter closes the visitor centre and leaves some park access roads unplowed.
