Wawa is a small former mining town on a lonely stretch of Highway 17, about 250 km north of Sault Ste. Marie and roughly 480 km east of Thunder Bay. There is no scheduled air service and buses run only a few days a week, so almost everyone arrives by car. The town answers one question well: a safe bed, a hot meal and a full tank before the empty road north to White River.

- Hitchhiking out of Wawa is unreliable: easy to reach, hard to leave.
- Winter closes the visitor centre and leaves some park access roads unplowed.
A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are fuel, distance and weather. Fill up before 9PM, carry water, and treat winter driving on Highway 17 with respect.
