Georgetown
Stop for 2–3 hours, not a night: the mineral collection and a pub meal are the whole town. Sleep at Undara or Cobbold Gorge instead.
Georgetown is a tiny Gulf Savannah town of about 250 people on the Gulf Developmental Road, roughly 140 km west of Undara Volcanic National Park and 40 km north of Forsayth. Almost everything a visitor does here fits in one stop: the Ted Elliott Mineral Collection, a counter meal at the Wenaru Hotel, fuel and a stretch. It works as a break on the Cairns–Normanton run or as a base for Cobbold Gorge, not as a destination in itself.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around
You need a car. There is no public transport in town and no taxi worth relying on. The Gulf Developmental Road is sealed and fine in the dry season; the road south to Forsayth is partly unsealed. Fuel up here — the next reliable stops are Mount Surprise east and Croydon west, and distances between them are long.

Watch out
Safety
- Wet season (roughly Dec–Mar) can close roads and cut off towns: check road conditions before driving and carry water.
- Fuel and food options are limited and can close early or run out: fill up when you can, and do not pass a roadhouse on an empty tank.
- Mobile coverage is patchy outside town; download offline maps before you leave Cairns.
- Long distances between stops with wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk: avoid driving those hours if you can.
