Orillia sits between Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching, 35 km northeast of Barrie and about 1 h 30 min by car from Toronto on Highway 11. It works as a half-way stop on the way to Muskoka or Algonquin, with a walkable downtown, a lakeside park and two small museums. One night covers the town; two nights only if you are boating, fishing or using it as a base for Casino Rama.

Downtown, the waterfront and the arts district are walkable in 15–20 min. Orillia Transit runs five loop routes from the downtown terminal on West St and Mississaga St, roughly every 30 min on weekdays, with a cash fare of about $2.25 (check). For Casino Rama, the lakes or Highway 11 motels you need a car or a taxi.

Safety

Orillia is a small, low-crime city; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 11, unlit lake edges after dark and seasonal businesses that are closed when you arrive.
  • Winter is real: −13 °C average lows in January and heavy snow; drive to conditions.
  • Many lake businesses, boat tours and the maple syrup farm are seasonal and closed outside summer or early spring.
  • Casino Rama is outside the city on Rama First Nations land: no sidewalk route, plan a car or taxi.
  • Blackflies and mosquitoes near the lakes in late spring and early summer.
