Rules in force · 9Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
  • Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
  • Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
  • Spain ↗Spain is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Spain ↗High-speed trains have airport-style baggage screening at the station and boarding gates that close a few minutes before departure: arrive early.
  • Spain ↗Carry your passport or ID: police may ask for it, and hotels must register every guest's document.
  • Spain ↗The Alhambra in Granada and the Sagrada Família in Barcelona sell timed tickets that sell out weeks ahead in season; book on the official sites before you fix your dates.

Burgos is a compact Castilian city on the Camino de Santiago, 240 km north of Madrid and 856 m up, so days are sunny and nights cold. The Gothic cathedral is the reason to stop, the old quarter is walkable in an afternoon, and two outlying monasteries fill a second morning. Most travellers pass through on the train or the pilgrimage trail; a night here is enough unless you are walking.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Walk: the old quarter, cathedral, Plaza Mayor and museums sit within about 15 minutes of each other. City buses cost under €1, pay on boarding. Official taxis are white with a red stripe on the front door; the meter tariff is shown on the roof (1 daytime, 2 night, 3 holidays). There is no park & ride; the central car park is under Plaza Mayor, entered from C Santander.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Atapuerca

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

The excavation site itself has little to see; the Museum of Human Evolution in Burgos tells the story better.

Palencia

go

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Train from Burgos-Rosa de Lima, about 1 h

Small cathedral city; pairs well with a half-day.

Valladolid

go

Door to door: About 2 h

Bigger city with museums and tapas; a full day.

Santo Domingo de la Calzada

go

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Bus or car east on the A-1, about 1 h

Camino town with a cathedral; easy half-day.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Old quarter around the cathedral

Everything on foot: cathedral, Plaza Mayor, tapas streets. Best for one night with bags.

Plaza Mayor and C Miranda

Central, next to the bus station and the Museum of Burgos; a short walk to the cathedral.

Near the river and Museum of Human Evolution

Quieter, 10–15 min walk south of the cathedral; handy for Las Huelgas.

Burgos-Rosa de Lima station area

5 km northeast of the centre; only useful for a very early departure.

Watch out

Safety

A safe, quiet city; the real risks are cold nights, uneven old-quarter pavements and pickpockets in the tapas streets around Huerto del Rey on busy weekends.
  • Burgos is 856 m up: summer days are hot but nights are cold year-round, pack a layer.
  • The bus station on C Miranda is cramped and poorly signed; allow extra time.
  • Burgos-Villafria airport has no commercial flights: do not book it.
  • Some churches and the small museums keep short midday-closed hours; check before you walk out.
  • Cathedral entry is ticketed and the combi ticket covers four other churches: keep the ticket.
