- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
- Southwest ↗Most national parks here charge an entrance fee per vehicle; the nationwide annual pass pays off at three or more parks — check current prices.
- Southwest ↗Alcohol is banned on the Navajo Nation and in many pueblos; some Utah restaurants do not serve alcohol or coffee.

Hovenweep protects six prehistoric Pueblo villages built between about 1200 and 1300 and abandoned around 1350, on the Utah–Colorado line in the Four Corners high desert. The Square Tower unit holds the visitor centre, the campground and the one real trail; the other five units are reached by dirt roads and are usually empty. It is a small, quiet stop that pairs with Mesa Verde, Cortez and Bluff rather than a destination on its own.

Why go
- Six standing Pueblo villages from the 1200s–1300s, with towers whose purpose is still debated.
- The Square Tower loop is short, signed and gives you the whole story in about an hour.
- Dark skies: the campground and the trail are far from any town light.
- The outlying units — Holly, Hackberry, Cutthroat Castle, Cajon, Horseshoe — are often completely empty.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The visitor centre, restrooms and the first section of the Square Tower loop are reachable on a firm surface.
- The full loop has uneven slickrock, steps and no handrails; not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.
- One campsite is wheelchair-accessible but is not designed for tent camping.
Visiting lightly
- Stay on the trail: cryptobiotic soil holds the desert together and recovers very slowly.
- Pack out all rubbish; there are no bins outside the visitor centre.
- Buy fuel and food in Cortez, Blanding or Bluff so the small gateway towns keep the benefit.
- Use a red light at night so you do not disturb other stargazers or wildlife.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Hovenweep National Monument?
A private vehicle pays about US$20 and a person arriving on foot or by bike about US$10 (2026 estimate); the ticket covers all six units for seven days. The America the Beautiful annual pass at about US$80 covers entry here and at other federal fee areas. Check the current NPS rate before you go.
What are the best hikes in Hovenweep National Monument?
The Square Tower loop, about 2 miles (3.2 km) from the visitor centre, is the only maintained trail and takes 1–1.5 hours. Everything else is a short walk from a dirt-road pullout at the outlying units — Holly, Hackberry, Cutthroat Castle, Cajon and Horseshoe. The petroglyph walk on the far canyon wall is ranger-led only.
When is the best time to visit Hovenweep National Monument?
April, May, September and October: mild days, cold nights and few people. Summer often passes 38°C and brings afternoon monsoon storms; winter is cold with snow and ice, and the dirt roads to the outlying units can be impassable.
Can I visit Hovenweep without a car?
Not realistically. The visitor centre is 40–45 miles from Cortez, Blanding and Bluff on county roads, and there is no public transport or shuttle. Drive yourself and do not rely on GPS for the last stretch.
Is Hovenweep worth it compared with Mesa Verde?
They are different stops. Mesa Verde is the big, developed park with paved loops and timed tours; Hovenweep is a small, quiet monument you can see in half a day, with towers you look at from a trail rather than walk through. Many travellers do both in the same trip.
Can I camp at Hovenweep?
Yes. The 31-site campground beside the visitor centre is first-come, first-served, open year-round, and takes cash or check only (2026 estimate about US$15). There are no hookups and a few sites fit RVs up to 36 feet.
