Mürren is a car-free village on a shelf above the Lauterbrunnen valley, reachable only by cable car and mountain railway. It is small, walkable end to end in about 15 minutes, and works as a quiet base for the Schilthorn, the Allmendhubel and the North Face Trail. Two nights covers it; one night is a taster.

On foot only. The village is level and small; hotels run electric carts and may collect luggage from the stations for a fee. Cars must be left at Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg.

Lauterbrunnen and the valley waterfalls

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a mountain village; the real risks are weather, unmarked cliff edges and altitude on the Schilthorn. Tell someone your route, carry a layer and check the lift timetable before you set off.
  • No road access: park at Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg and continue by cable car and train.
  • The Schilthornbahn closes for maintenance around the last week of April and for about three weeks from mid-November: check dates before booking.
  • Construction of the replacement cable car has caused noise and disruption; check the current status.
  • Mountain restaurants such as Allmendhubel and Piz Gloria close around 17:00.
  • Last ascent from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp is around 20:30; the Stechelberg–Mürren lift runs later, to about midnight.
