Uşak

Give Uşak one night for the Lydian treasure museum and the old town; add a second only if you have a car for the canyons.

Uşak sits 240 km inland from the Aegean coast, so its climate and its mood are Anatolian rather than seaside. It was a weaving town whose Ushak rugs reached Europe centuries ago, and its archaeological museum holds the repatriated Lydian hoard. The centre is flat and walkable; the canyons, Roman ruins and Phrygian bridge in the countryside need a car.

Getting around

The centre is flat and compact, so walk it: İsmet Paşa Caddesi runs north from the highway overpass and its pedestrianised northern half is the liveliest stretch. Public minibuses serve the suburbs but you are unlikely to need them. For Ulubey Canyon, Blaundus, Sebaste and Taşyaran Valley you want your own vehicle; by public transport each one eats a full day.

Ulubey Canyon

go

Door to door: About 45 min each way by car

Drive 32 km (20 mi) south on D595 towards Ulubey, then 1 km (0.6 mi) east of the village

Free to walk the rim; the glass-floored balcony and extra attractions are paid. Dry weather only.

Blaundus

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min each way by car

Drive 44 km (27 mi) southwest via Ulubey, Inay and Eşme, then follow the brown signs onto the dirt road

Hellenistic site on a canyon peninsula; open daily, free.

Taşyaran Valley and Çataltepe Bridge

go

Door to door: About 1 h each way by car

Drive 50 km (31 mi) west on D300, then the side lane 500 m east of the bridge

Wave-sculpted ravine with stairways down to the stream; pair it with the Seljuk bridge.

Sebaste

caution

Door to door: About 45 min by car; most of a day by public transport

Drive 34 km (21 mi) southeast on D595 near Selçikler, or take a bus and walk

Scrappy Roman ruins; only worth it if you are already driving the loop.

Kula

go

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min (check)

Bus or car west on D300

Preserved old town and a volcanic geopark; a natural stop between Uşak and Izmir.

İsmet Paşa Caddesi and the old town

The eating and drinking strip, walkable to the bazaar, Grand Mosque and most hotels.

Around the railway station and Orhan Dengiz Bulvarı

Quiet and practical for the museum and early trains; walk time to the centre varies by hotel, so check the map before booking.

Gazi Bulvarı by the D300

Highway-side chain hotels with parking; convenient by car, noisier at night.

Watch out

Safety

Uşak is a calm inland city and the centre feels relaxed by day and early evening. The practical risks are fast traffic on the D300 and countryside dirt roads that turn slick after rain; walk with care after dark and keep to lit main streets.
  • Outlying sites sit on dirt roads that turn slippery after rain: go in dry weather and check the surface before committing.
  • Central parking is scarce and no-parking signs are widely ignored; try the side alleys instead of the main streets.
  • Some smaller museums keep irregular hours and can be shut without notice: confirm before travelling out.
  • Summer inland heat is real; carry water and start outdoor sites early.
